Free STEM challenge cards from the James Dyson Foundation that build problem-solving, creativity, and hands-on learning.
Dyson STEM Challenge Cards for Quick STEM lessons

I am always on the lookout for engaging resources that not only align with curriculum standards but also inspire creativity and critical thinking among my students. The James Dyson Foundation’s STEM Challenge Cards are a tool in this regard, offering a series of 44 free science and engineering challenges designed to ignite curiosity and problem-solving skills in learners. Oh, and if you are wondering, it is the same Dyson that makes the vacuums. Who knew?

Utilising Challenge Cards in STEM Lessons

Dyson Marble Run, Balloon Kebabs, and Dyson Harmonica

Each Challenge Card presents a unique problem-solving activity that encourages students to apply scientific principles and engineering concepts. For instance, the “Balloon Car Race” challenge has students constructing a balloon-powered car using simple materials like balloons, plastic cups, straws, thread, and rubber bands. This activity not only demonstrates principles of propulsion and aerodynamics but also fosters hands-on engagement.

Integrating these challenges into your STEM curriculum can be approached in various ways:

  • Introduction to Concepts: Use a Challenge Card as a fun, interactive introduction to a new scientific concept or engineering principle.
  • Skill Reinforcement: After teaching a topic, select a relevant challenge to reinforce and apply the learned concepts.
  • Project-Based Learning: Assign challenges as projects, encouraging students to work collaboratively, fostering teamwork and communication skills.

Adaptability Across Year Levels

One of the strengths of the STEM Challenges is their adaptability. While the core objective of each challenge remains consistent, the complexity can be tailored to suit different age groups.

  • Lower Primary Levels: Focus on the basic construction and observation aspects of the challenges, emphasising exploration and simple explanations.
  • Upper Primary to Middle School: Introduce more detailed scientific explanations and encourage students to hypothesise outcomes before conducting the challenges.
  • High School: Incorporate advanced concepts, require detailed reports on findings, and encourage modifications to the original challenges to test variables and deepen understanding.
